Module 10c: eXtension: A Resource for Personal Finance and Agriculture-Related Topics

eXtension (pronounced ee-extension) is unlike any other search engine or information-based website. It's a space where Cooperative Extension content providers gather and produce educational materials on a wide range of topics. eXtension combines the efforts of more than 70 land-grant universities to provide a "one-stop shop" to access resources developed by Extension faculty across the nation.

Because eXtension resources are available at any time from any Internet connection, they help solve real-life problems in "real time." Two features that are especially valuable to consumers are eXtension's extensive bank of frequently asked questions (FAQs) and Ask an Expert (AaE), where consumers can get answers to their questions via e-mail.

eXtension content is developed by groups of Extension professionals called Communities of Practice or CoPs. Many CoPs produce content on agricultural topics including: beef cattle, consumer horticulture, corn and soybean production, dairy products, goats, horses, pork, organic farming, and wildlife damage management.

There is also a CoP for personal finance topics. Visitors can learn about everything from credit, investing, retirement, and estate planning to organizing household records and teaching children about money. Other features include financial learning lessons and links to online calculators. Many of the personal finance experts who answer AaE questions from consumers have advanced degrees and certifications in financial planning.
